In the quiet village of Thondamanallur, located in the Kancheepuram District, lives Vengadesan, a 39-year-old man whose life took a tragic turn six years ago. Before his accident, he worked as a daily wage labourer (coolie) to support himself and his mother.
One day, while returning from work, he met with a serious road accident that caused a spinal cord injury. Since then, he has had no sensation below his chest and has been unable to walk or work.
After the accident, his father cared for him devotedly until his passing two years ago. Now, Vengadesan lives with his elderly mother, Mrs. Kasthuri, who, despite her age, still goes for 100 days of government rural employment work to earn a small income. He has never married and has no children, relying entirely on his mother and the small assistance he receives.
Vengadesan receives a ₹1,500 disability pension from the Government, which he uses mainly for food and medicine. However, this modest amount is far from enough to cover his basic needs and medical care.
A year ago, he requested a bed to rest comfortably, as his condition makes it difficult for him to lie or sit properly. A kind-hearted donor from Chennai, Mr. Iyappan, generously donated a bed through Malar Trust India, which had been delivered to Vengadesan. In addition, Malar Trust India decided to provide occasional monthly provisions to help him and his mother manage their daily needs with dignity.
Vengadesan has been now included in our Individual Sponsorships Program and the monthly provisions have been replaced with a regular donation of ₹1,000 per month.
This initiative is a testament to how small acts of compassion can make a big difference in someone’s life. Malar Trust India remains committed to supporting individuals like Vengadesan, who face life’s challenges with strength and courage.
