A new roof for Rajalakshmi

The house, as it was

Rajalakshmi is a woman in her early forties, living alone and coping with some mental health challenges. She lives in the village of Amoor and she is a regular guest at the Malar Trust community kitchen since the day we opened it — a warm meal, a smile, a bit of company.

Last November, during the monsoon season, her fragile hut — built with leaves and improvised materials — was badly damaged by heavy rains. With no money and no family support, she had nowhere to go. So we welcomed her into the kitchen building: for a few months, she slept in a safe corner and helped out with daily tasks in return.

When the monsoon ended, one big problem remained: her home was still uninhabitable. But thanks to a generous donation from Italy, we were able to act. The rotting leaf roof was replaced with a solid metal sheet, and the damaged parts of the hut were repaired.

Today, Rajalakshmi is back in her own home. She’s happy — and so are we. She’s regained her space, her routine, and the support of her neighbors. But it’s not goodbye: we still see her every day at the Malar kitchen, where she’s always welcome for lunch.

Thank you to those who helped restore her dignity and give her a place to call home
